I first heard about tertiary student loans from an alumnus. While he shared his journey and growth from secondary school to university, one sentence stood out to me. "The reality of life is cruel," he said, "having lived without worrying about basic necessities in secondary school, I only realised as a university student that everything revolves around money." Burdened by financial difficulties for the first time in his life, he was at a loss for what to do - until PROMISE's loans provided the perfect way out during his time as a university student. However, I disregarded his earnest advice back then, thinking that he was exaggerating the situation and didn't take his advice to heart.
After the results for DSE came out, I was luckily admitted to my favourite course at university and was incredibly excited. I was even given the opportunity to live at my university's dormitories and experience what it's like to live alone, which I had dreamed of doing ever since I was a kid. Seeing all of my hard work being rewarded, I didn't think of how my dreams for the future had hidden risks.
In addition to applying for tertiary student loans from the government, I, like most other university students began tutoring in my free time as a source of income. However, I needed to spend additional time and expenses on regular research projects, group discussions, data collection activities etc. Having even less time to earn extra money and ever-increasing expenses slowly became the norm for me. The added pressure of frequent society activities exacerbated this vicious cycle too.
Moreover, the expenditures that came after moving into the university dormitories made it impossible to estimate and manage my budget. I originally thought I would receive my university's accommodation subsidy but that fell through. Simple tasks in my daily life, such as cooking and washing my clothes, also became a burden – even without taking into consideration the rent and living costs I had to split with my flatmate. Financial pressure from all directions had already felt suffocating, and the sudden onslaught of the Covid-19 pandemic worsened my situation even more. Tuition centres temporarily closed down; personal tutoring also became impossible. In a flash, my income dropped a lot. Some say that university is a microcosm of society – I finally had a taste of the reality and the frustrations that came with it.
In a time where all of my dreams turned to ash, I suddenly thought of my alumnus's sharing about student loans. More importantly, I remembered that I was also eligible to apply for PROMISE's private loans for tertiary students. I checked immediately and went online to register. Despite being a university student, they approved my loan with incredible efficiency. Money arrives into my account right away, solving my problems in an instant.
Now, I can slowly pick myself back up. I know now that I need to always remain vigilant and be flexible in facing certain obstacles and crises. Only then, will I be able to ultimately find my footing in society. I'm very thankful for my alumnus's guidance as well as PROMISE's loan, which provides university students like me with a proper contingency plan.
