ONLINE SECURITY

Protect yourself online
In our view, there are a few key rules that offer the most protection online for the least amount of effort. What you should always do:

  1. Make sure you have the latest security updates and patches
From time to time, weaknesses are discovered in programmes running on your computer. These weaknesses can be exploited by virus writers and hackers to gain access to computers. As such, publishers will release 'patches' from time to time to correct these weaknesses. To check for patches and updates you should visit the publisher's website, typically their 'Download' section. Ensure all your devices (including but not limited to a computer, mobile device or any other telecommunication equipment) collectively with all software and other hardware (collectively referred as “Device”) are regularly updated with the latest software.
  2. Install and update anti-virus software
You may already be using anti-virus software but to be effective, the software should be updated on a regular basis with the latest virus definition files.
  3. Enable personal firewalls
Secure your internet connection and Device with a personal firewall. It ensures the right data goes to the right places, and keeps unwanted connections from accessing your data.
  4. Be alert to potential fraud
Be aware that there are fake websites designed to trick you and collect your personal data. Sometimes links to such websites are contained in email messages purporting to come from financial service providers. Never follow a link contained in an email – even if it appears to come from your financial service provider.
  5. Keep your passwords secure
    • (a)Please memorise your password. Do not write or store the password on any of the devices used for the internal service or anything which is usually kept with these devices, or record password in any way without covering it.
    • (b)Do not use your date of birth, HKID/passport number, telephone or lucky number, or other easy-to-guess numbers, 000000 or 999999 as your password, and avoid selecting the same password that you have used for accessing other web services
    • (c)Do not disclose your password to anyone (including Promise staff and the police).
    • (d)Do not allow anyone else to use your member login ID and password.
    • (e)Please regularly change your password through our Online System of this website or 24-hour Member Hotline.
  6. Be careful where you go online
Avoid using Internet (or any other internet services that require passwords) at internet cafés, libraries or any other public sites to avoid the risk of information being copied and abused after you leave.
  7. Always log off
Remember to log off from Online System and close your browser when you have finished your Online System. This will clear all traces of your visit from the Device's memory.
  8. Password-protect your Device
You should set password to protect your all Device, this will prevent other people from using it if it is left unattended or stolen.
  9. Disable the 'AutoComplete' function within your browser
The 'AutoComplete' function on your Device stores information that you have previously entered, e.g.: addresses and passwords. Typically, the browser's own Help function will tell you how to do disable the function.
  10. Take care offline
Remember that you can protect yourself even when you're not using your Device.
    • (a)Read your statements
    • (i)Review your statements for any unusual transactions and notify the financial service providers immediately if you suspect any discrepancies.
    • (ii)You can conveniently access your transaction records via our Online system.
    • (b)Keep us informed
    • (i)Tell us of any changes in your personal data (e.g. address change).

How Promise protects you online
Promise (Hong Kong) Co., Limited ("Promise") ensures your online transactions are safe and secure. As a financial service provider, Promise is used to thinking about security. Promise uses industry standard security technology and practices to safeguard your account from any unauthorized access.

Promise does this in the following ways:

  1. Using log-ins and passwords to make sure Promise’s dealing with you
Online access to your account is only possible once you have authenticated yourself using the correct login ID and security details.
  2. Creating secure online sessions
When you log into Online system or fill in online application, you are said to be in a secure session. You know you are in a secure session if the URL address begins with https:// or a padlock symbol showing “Security Lock” appears at the top of the page as part of the address bar.
  3. Using encryption
Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) technology is used within your Online system session to encrypt your personal data before it leaves your Device so that no one else can read it. Depending on your browser setting, a window will appear to notify you that you will be entering a secured page. Promise uses 128-bit SSL encryption, which is accepted as the industry standard. If your system does not support 128-bit SSL encryption, you may not be able to access Promise’s Online system and other financial services.
  4. Using "layers" of security
Promise uses many layers of security. For obvious reasons, Promise cannot disclose all of them, but Promise always does the following:
    • (a)Ensure that all of Promise’s operating systems are updated promptly with the latest security patches.
    • (b)Keep Promise’s anti-virus software updated.
    • (c)Promise uses firewalls to prevent unauthorized intrusion.
  5. Using session time outs
If you forget to log-off after service online or your Device remains inactive for a period of time during a session or Promise does not receive any message during a session, Promise’s systems automatically log you off. Pages viewed during a secure session are not recorded in your Device's temporary files.
  6. Having automatic lock-outs
After a number of incorrect attempts to log in, Promise disables online or hotline access to your account. To re-activate your account, you need visit any one of our branches in person.
